Abuja — The European Union, EU, is funding the Solar for Health project in Plateau State with the aim of providing sustainable solar power solutions to over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The initiative is part of the Nigeria Solar for Health Project, NISHP, designed to enhance access to reliable electricity for medical equipment at healthcare facilities in the country.
To push the project in Plateau State, being funded in partnership with the the state government, the EU has committed 1.7 million euros for the project’s implementation by NTU International and 8.7 million euros for infrastructure being managed by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ.
At the launch of the project, the Head of Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Inga Stefanowicz, stressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy sector through initiatives like the Solar for Health project.
According to her, the Solar for Health project is a significant step in the partnership between the EU and Plateau State, with the aim of providing reliable and clean energy in healthcare facilities.
Speaking on the potentials of the project, she disclosed that it would be supporting a minimum of 25 healthcare facilities across the state, thereby improving energy access and enhancing overall healthcare services.
Also speaking during the project launch, the Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang, emphasised the important role of energy in providing quality healthcare, maintaining that energy access was key to powering life-saving equipment and ensuring effective medical care.
He said: “Without energy, our healthcare services are limited. This project is a game changer for Plateau State, and we are committed to its success.”
Earlier in a statement on Facebook, announcing the project, Governor Mutfwang had said: “I am proud to announce the launch of the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP) in Plateau State, an initiative designed to provide sustainable solar power solutions to over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across our 17 Local Government Areas.
