Port Harcourt — In a bold push to elevate Akwa Ibom’s aviation sector and attract increased investment and tourism, Governor Umo Eno has approved the release of N1.194 billion for critical infrastructure upgrades at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.
The funds are specifically earmarked to enable night flight operations, a move business leaders say could significantly boost commercial activity across the region.
According to a statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, the approved sum covers the replacement of navigational aids, upgrade of airfield lighting, settlement of electricity bills, and service charges to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA. These upgrades will allow the airport to operate safely beyond daylight hours.
“The Governor’s directive is clear: the airport management has eight weeks to deliver. Any delay will attract sanctions,” Umanah stated.
“This investment underscores the Governor’s vision to transform Akwa Ibom into a strategic hub for tourism and aviation in West Africa.”
Governor Eno’s decision followed a technical request from airport management, seeking urgent intervention to modernize the airport’s navigational and lighting systems to meet global standards. He has since instructed that all works must align with international aviation protocols.
“This is not just about lights. It’s about building investor confidence and positioning Akwa Ibom as a top-tier business and logistics destination.”
To monitor compliance, the Commissioner for Finance and Coordinating Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Mr. Emem Bob, led an inspection tour of all ongoing airport projects, alongside Umanah and the Managing Director of the airport, Mr. Uwem Ekanem.
Governor Eno also reaffirmed his commitment to completing other flagship projects within the airport ecosystem, including the new terminal building, VIP car park and access road, aircraft apron, taxiway, advanced security surveillance systems, Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul, MRO, facility, and the Aviation Village.
“Akwa Ibom must be future-ready,” the Governor declared in an earlier briefing. “World-class infrastructure is the bedrock of economic transformation under the ARISE Agenda.”
