    – Moves towards zero carbon emission

    Vincent Toritseju

Lagos — The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, has commenced checking carbon emission from commercial boats just as it is set to deploy both under water and aerial drones to monitor commercial boat movements for safety and security reasons across the state.

Speaking to SweetcrudeReports in Lagos, Ibrahim Famuyiwa, Head of Operations of the agency, said that from the agency’s Monitoring Unit and Data Management Center, it can see operations and boat movements from virtually every jetty across the state.

Famuyiwa said that the Center is also meant to ensure the use of life jacket by both commuters and operators for safety reason adding that the insistence on this practice has brought a drastic reduction in boat accidents across the state.

According Famuyiwa, LASWA is making plans to acquire higher capacity boats with low emission level so as to reduce the small high carbon emission boats.

He said: “In the next one or two years, there are lots of innovations we are working on in the back end; we are already considering carbon zero emission friendly vessels technologies.

“We are also looking at higher capacity vessels so that we can move a high number of people at the same time which will reduce smaller capacity boats with all sorts of emission and polluting the environment.

“Our jetties and terminals will also start to undergo a lot of transformation so as to key into the global emission goals and targets.

“The waterway in Lagos is starting to receive a lot of attention”.
