5 May 2013, Abidjan – President John Mahama of Ghana has assured his people that local production of gas will be possible before the end of the year.
The president, who made the promise at the inauguration of the Bui Hydro-Electric Power Project in Brong Ahafo Region on Saturday, said the development would boost power generation in the country.
He attributed current energy challenges faced by Ghanaians to inadequate supply of gas.
“I am convinced that the end of year target for processing and production of gas is realisable.
“What we need is the completion of the gas plant. Ultimately, Ghana’s energy security is dependent on its gas reserves,’’ he said.
Ghana is building a multi-million dollar gas plant at Atuabo in the Ellembele District of the Western Region.
The plant, which is intended to deliver processed gas from Atuabo to the Aboadze-based Takoradi Thermal Processing Plant, is expected be completed by the end of 2013.
Ghana is experiencing power cuts due to shortfall in gas supply.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) in statement on Friday, called on the Electricity Company of Ghana to undertake load management exercise in various parts of the country.
It said that there would be a daily reduction in power supply by 100 megawatts during the peak period between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
