25 January 2012, Sweetcrude, CALABAR — The Nigerian Navy has handed over eight persons suspected to be involved in illegal bunkering to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution.
The suspects were arrested by officers of the Nigerian Navy, Eastern Command, at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) jetty in Calabar, Cross River State.
While effecting the arrests, the command also impounded 81 drums of petrol and 105 drums of diesel, which had been handed over to the officials of NNPC.
The suspects were, Tuesday, arraigned before a Federal High Court, Calabar and were remanded at the Afokang prisons in the state capital.
Briefing newsmen on efforts of the Eastern Naval Command towards eradicating bunkering, militancy and piracy on the eastern waterways, Commanding Officer of NNS Victory, Navy Commodore Kingdom Itoko, said the government was committed to stopping the illegal business in the country and that the Navy had been directed to intensify efforts to stop illegal bunkering.
