10 September 2016, Kano — The Kano Electricity Distribution Company Plc (KEDCO) said it has lost transformer oil, aluminium conductors, cables and other valuable materials worth N108,831, 550m to vandals within the period of six weeks.

The company’s spokesperson, Mohammed Kandi, said in a statement that the spate of vandalism, energy theft and meter bypass which had recently risen in KEDCO’s areas of operation was unbearable.

The statement said that the appalling development had caused the company huge losses and setbacks within a period under review, calling on the customers, who bear the brunt, to protect installations in their areas.

It quoted KEDCO’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Engr. David Omoloye, saying: “The quantity of material vandalised from August to date include: 46.5 drums of transformer oil, 2, 130 aluminium conductors (150mm2), 4, 500 aluminium conductors (100mm2), 535 and 15 (150mm2&70mm2).”

Other items, he said, included 825 XLPE Cable (35mm2), 529 (500mm2) and161 (300mm2) Incomer Cables and 40 Busbar.
