NUPENG tasks NLC founding fathers on confab

27 January 2014, Lagos – Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has called on the founding fathers of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to take special interest in the forthcoming National Delegates Conference, NDC, where new leaders would emerge.

NLC-300x225The union said beyond the February NDC, the unity of labour movement is paramount to it, insisting that such unity must be based on equity, tran-sparency, fair play and justice.

At a briefing in Lagos, NUPENG President, Mr. Igwe Achese, contended that the union had sacrificed much for Nigeria and labour movement and should be appreciated, arguing that while NUPENG was not desperate to produce the president of the congress, which it had the right to aspire to, but core values of labour must be respected ahead of and in the February conference.

Achese called on the founding fathers of NLC to ensure the congress became stronger and united, saying “NUPENG cannot fight NLC. Insinuation that NUPENG is using its strength to intimidate other unions is unfounded.

“But NUPENG has been constant in fighting against anti-workers and masses policies of government and employers. In all these, no union had been persecuted and even proscribed by government like NUPENG.”
