Mkpoikana Udoma 06 June 2016, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt – The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, on Monday threatened to embark on strike over what it described as victimisation of its members by two oil companies operating in Rivers State.
The Acting Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, Port Harcourt Zone, Comrade Charles Eleto, in Port Harcourt, said the strike will commence tomorrow (Wednesday) if nothing was done to recall the workers.
Eleto explained that the two oil companies, Hilong Engineering Nigeria Limited and Uniterm Nigeria Limited, suspended and sacked some of their workers for joining labour union.
The NUPENG boss reiterated that the union is pained by the actions of the companies because “it is against labour laws, and over 200 of its members are directly affected”.
He stated that NUPENG has written to the Rivers State Government, the Commissioner of Police and the Director of State Security Services over the impending strike should the companies fail to recall these workers.
