Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, is prioritizing underexplored frontier basins, including the Calabar Flank, in the 2025 Licensing Round.
NUPRC Chief Executive, Mrs Oritemeyiwa Eyesan confirmed this at the Energy Cross River Conference and Exhibition 2026, held in Calabar, the state capital.
Eyesan, represented by the Director of Exploration at NUPRC, Mr Benjamin Ewuga revealed that three of the 50 blocks on offer, PPL 2A61, PPL 2A62, and PPL 2A45, are located within the Calabar Flank, a geological province long considered underexplored despite its resource potential.
“Through this initiative, we are unlocking new geological provinces with considerable potential for future discoveries,” Ewuga said.
He noted that the 2025 Licensing Round has been structured to advance frontier exploration and create new investment opportunities across Nigeria.
He further stressed that targeting frontier basins not only diversifies the country’s exploration portfolio but also establishes a foundation for long-term growth and sustainability in the upstream oil and gas sector.
Ewuga’s remarks highlight NUPRC’s strategy of stimulating investment in underdeveloped basins, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to remain a competitive destination for hydrocarbon exploration.
