26 June 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – PUBLIC power supply in Nigeria has received a boost from the Olorunsogo Power Station, as the plant is now contributing 160mega watts of power to the national grid. The power station has eight units with combined capacity of 304MW or 38MW each, but has been working far below capacity since its inauguration due to gas supply issues.
However, with the recent improvement in the supply of gas to the station, seven of the eight units became operational and are now contributing about 160MW to the National Grid.
A statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, last week expressed the hope that this will provide some succour to the public who have been groaning under irregular power supply due to poor generation as a result of gas shortagesto the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCNthermal plants.
The management explained that aside from one of the eight units which has a technical hitch, the station was in prime condition and ready to contribute its own quota to the National Grid, as long as there was sufficient gas.
The power station which is located in Olorunsogo, near Papalanto in Ewekoro Local Government area of Ogun State, was commissioned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
