Port Harcourt — Nine contract workers of Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Limited, who were kidnapped in July from an offshore facility operated by the oil firm, have regained their freedom, the River State Police Command Police has confirmed.

Recall that on July 2, 2020, the company had announced that there was attack by suspected sea pirates on BW Offshore’s FPSO Sendje Berge on contract to Addax Petroleum in OML126, offshore Nigeria.

Following the attack on the facility, the company had temporarily shut its operations and asked other offshore staff to go home for safety, while government authorities and security agencies were alerted.

Although it could not be ascertained if any ransom was paid before the oil workers were released, the Rivers State Police Command has said the oil workers were freed  since last Thursday.

Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, SP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the development, disclosed that a joint security operation was launched immediately after the abduction, to apprehend the suspects.

“Yes, I can confirm that they have been released. They were released on Thursday and have reunited with their families.

“Efforts are on the arrest the kidnappers. We have increased our presence on the coastal communities and the waterways,” he said
