Port Harcourt — The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has energized a new 150/187.5 MVA power transformer at its 330/132kV Delta Subregion, marking a significant boost in electricity supply for the South-South region.

The newly activated transformer has increased the subregion’s capacity from 345MVA to 532MVA.

This expansion enables the delivery of more bulk power to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, for onward distribution to customers through key feeders including Transcorp Delta IV, Effurun, Oghara, Amukpe, Afiesere, Ozoro, and Ughelli 33kV.

Speaking on the development, TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, said, “The energization of this transformer is a critical milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen the national grid. It will enhance the reliability of power supply to the Delta Subregion and support economic activities in the area.”

The TCN has emphasized that the upgrade aligns with its broader strategy to support economic growth by ensuring more reliable and consistent electricity delivery across Nigeria.

“This is more than an infrastructure project; it is a business enabler. Stable power supply attracts investors, supports industrialisation, and improves the standard of living for Nigerians,” the spokesperson added.

The project forms part of the ongoing partnership between TCN and the World Bank, aimed at rehabilitating and expanding Nigeria’s transmission network to improve grid efficiency and service delivery nationwide.

The transformer’s commissioning could have immediate economic benefits, particularly for businesses that rely on stable electricity supply to operate efficiently.

A business executive in Warri, who requested anonymity, noted, “Frequent outages have long hindered production and increased operational costs. This new capacity will reduce downtime and improve our ability to meet demand.”

The Delta Subregion, home to significant commercial activity, is expected to experience enhanced power stability following the transformer’s energization, which could reduce the reliance on expensive alternative energy sources such as diesel generators.
