Port Harcourt — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned WAGL Energy Limited’s new 40,000 cubic metres, CBM, Liquefied Petroleum Gas vessel christened MT Iyaloja (Lagos), in what has been described as bold statement of Nigeria’s intent to dominate Africa’s clean energy value-chain.

The commissioning, which took place in Ulsan, South Korea, underscores Nigeria’s expanding investment in gas as a transition fuel and its strategy to boost access to clean cooking energy at home while strengthening export capacity.

Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Tinubu praised WAGL Energy Limited, NNPC Ltd. and Sahara Group for pushing the boundaries of Africa’s energy infrastructure.

“This commissioning is a clear testament to our commitment to delivering clean and sustainable energy solutions, not just for Nigeria, but for Africa and the world,” the President declared.

“I commend WAGL Energy Limited, NNPC Ltd. and Sahara Group for their strategic foresight, technical excellence and unwavering dedication.”

The MT Iyaloja (Lagos) is a dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier designed to strengthen Nigeria’s energy logistics and increase supply efficiency. With its addition, WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between NNPC Ltd. and Sahara Group, now commands a total LPG vessel capacity of 162,000 CBM.

Other carriers in the fleet include MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT Baru MK, and MT Sapet.

Ekpo emphasized that the vessel goes beyond shipping, symbolizing Nigeria’s long-term strategy to improve LPG penetration and accelerate the Federal Government’s “Decade of Gas” vision.

“The MT Iyaloja represents more than just an investment in maritime assets; it represents Nigeria’s future in clean energy and our resolve to provide affordable LPG to millions of homes,” he said.

Industry executives at the event highlighted that the vessel’s commissioning will enhance Nigeria’s role in global energy security, while reducing dependence on biomass and kerosene for household energy needs.

“This vessel underscores our belief that Africa must be at the forefront of clean energy investments,” a senior WAGL official added. “It strengthens our infrastructure, improves affordability, and secures supply chains for LPG markets across Africa.”

The commissioning comes as global LPG demand continues to grow, positioning Nigeria to capture new markets and advance its clean energy agenda.
