10 July 2012, Sweetcrude, ABUJA – NIGERIA’s Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, Tuesday, dismissed a suit filed by Cross River State government, seeking clarification on the ownership of 76 offshore oil wells in the Niger Delta.
The apex court declared that the contentious 76 oil wells belong to Akwa Ibom State, settling the dispute between the governments of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states over the ownership of oil wells.
Cross River State government had approached the Supreme Court, asking the court to suspend the verdict in the appeal it lodged against Akwa Ibom on the matter.
The state government had in its appeal, contended that the controversial oil wells, which were reportedly transferred to Akwa Ibom by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission belong to it.
