04 September 2013, Liberia – Several persons have been arrested in Liberia’s Nimba County for their alleged involvement in stealing some electric wires that were supplying current to the county.
Lands & Mines Minister, Patrick Sandolo told journalists in Monrovia that the stolen wires from a bordering town of Loguatuo in Liberia were used to supply electricity to the county through Cote D’Ivoire from Ghana.
Sandolo explained that the suspects, as well as the NorthStar, buyer of the stolen wires, who is well known for dealing scraps in Nimba County, have been arrested by the Liberia National Police and are presently in custody. Police Public Relation boss, Sam Collins has denied the story.
Although, the Lands, Mines and Energy Minister did not give the total number of persons arrested and the exact location of their detention he said that the alleged criminals were protected and are in detention, pending prosecution.
According to Minister Sandolo, the Government of Liberia through the Lands, Mines and Energy Ministry will punish anyone caught in the diabolical act which he said has the propensity of denying thousands of people electricity.
Meanwhile, when Police spokesperson Sam Collins was contacted, he said his office was not aware of any information of power theft or the news of anyone being arrested by police, but assured that the police was going to launch an investigation to verify the information.
