*As Abia State wins 10th National Quiz Competition

24 July 2012, Sweetcrude, Abuja – As part of efforts to touch the lives of young Nigerians positively, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has reiterated its commitment to the support of science based subjects in secondary schools in order to sustain the growth and development of the petroleum industry.

The Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Andrew Yakubu, made this commitment during the Grand Finale of the 10th edition of the NNPC Annual National Quiz Competition in Abuja in which students representing Abia State emerged winners.

Mr. Yakubu said that as a responsible corporate organization, the NNPC will continue to support the Federal Government in its bid to encourage science education among youths and to develop the building blocks on which the future of the country depends.

“The NNPC National quiz competition is aimed at preparing the participants for promotional and qualifying examinations into tertiary institutions by improving science education and sharpening their competitive spirit,”Engr. Yakubu submitted.

He informed that the Corporation would continue to provide the platform for the encouragement of interest in science and science related education for the benefit of the oil and gas industry and the country at large.

The GMD urged the students to take full advantage of every opportunity to develop themselves in order to be adequately prepared and equipped to fulfil the development aspirations of the country.

The NNPC helmsman also revealed that most recipients of the Corporation’s scholarship have started graduating with impressive results since the inception of the programme ten years ago, adding that the emerging winners of the competition would be awarded scholarship for higher studies.

“In keeping with our usual tradition, the emerging winners of this competition will be awarded scholarships to any tertiary institution of their choice in Nigeria. The scholarship will cover the duration of their course of study,” Engr. Yakubu stated.

Speaking for the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Fidel Pepple averred that education is the foundation on which nations are built saying NNPC has paid great attention to the national quiz competition because it is an instrument for enhancing science education and promoting cross cultural interaction among the students.

“We have paid great attention to this national quiz competition because we see it as an instrument for enhancing science education in the country, coaching students towards their promotional and qualifying examinations, building friendships amongst them and enlightening students and the public on NNPC activities,” Mr. Pepple stated.
