NERC explained that the actual tariff for one kilowatt-hour of power is meant to be N51, as against the current unit cost of N31.58 for which electricity distribution companies are selling the commodity.

He explained that the inability of the firms to meet their obligations to customers by supplying them electricity regularly, meters, and other equipment, was as a result of the debts which run into billions of naira.
Oduntan urged the federal government to extend its interventions to all segments of the electricity supply chain rather than focusing solely on the generation segment.
On consumers who were disconnected in estates and other built-up residential areas for debts owed by the MDAs and the military, Ofulue promised that the company would ensure that customers, who did not owe were not unjustly punished.
NESI said in its daily statistics on energy losses that the industry lost N1.525 billion on December 24, 2016 alone. It was also disclosed that about 12 power stations could not produce electricity during off-peak under the review period.
“No Disco is making any profit in this sector now. No Disco has less than N10 loss today on power supplied to consumers. We are struggling with cost recovery,” said Oduntan.
Oduntan blamed the crisis in the electricity supply system on inconsistency and ineptitude on the part of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), even as he called on government to intervene and help out by finding last solution to the problem of shortfall in the sector.
